Persepolis reading response

I relate this chapter it to the movie Even the Rain. In the movie people view the dead as martyrs, and take pictures of them, when it is forbidden, to show people what is happening. That is what happened in this chapter. The only thing I didn’t understand and can’t relate it to the book so, I will ask a question is; why did they laugh about the dead guy?

Through the chapter the characters talk about the war, they say it was forbidden, that they could die thanks to the rebellion, but that they would give their life for the country. Everyone that dies because they are fighting for their country is an automatic martyr. That’s what they do in the book. Another very important component in this chapter is the hope that all the characters have; they think one day they will be independent. In the book they also make reference of how the government is spending all their money in ridiculous celebrations. In the movie it is the same the government spends a lot of money in celebrations. The people are full of hope, like a character named Daniel leader of the revolution that almost lost his life. And in the movie they also talk about the government waiting all their money in unnecessary things like streets.

  1. These images reveal the injustices committed in Bolivia around the issue of water rights.

to show people what is happening

    The first is more specific

That is what happened in this chapter

In this chapter, Marji's father photographs physical abuse and murders committed by the Iranian government.

they laugh about the dead guy?
Marji's parents laugh about the martyrdom of a man with cancer?

Laughing about the death of a man with cancer seems unusually cruel. In desperate situations, like the one Marji's family is in, the death mixup between a martyr and a cancer victim could offer a little dark humor in a terrible situation.
